girlventures

GirlVentures formally the Bay Area Girls Center was founded in 1997 by bay area educators Megan Armstrong and Elizabeth McLeod. Both Megan and Elizabeth earned their Masters of Education from the Harvard University School of Education. The core programs were influenced by their work with Drs. Annie Rogers and Carol Gilligan at the Harvard Project on Girls' Development and the Psychology of Women and model programs at the Thompson Island Outward Bound School an the Center for Ventures in Girls Education.

GirlVentures is about empowering adolescent girls to discover and access their strengths through safe outdoor adventures, creative arts, and group interaction. GirlVentures offers programs designed to physically and emotionally challenge girls winto new ways of thinking and relating within their enviroments.

Activities include: backpacking, rock climbing, group initiatives and problem solving, creative-expressive projects, sea kayaking, discussions about girls' issues, and more.

2005 Programs
Project Courage
- a 14-day outdoor adventure which explores Pt. ReyesNational Seashore, Sonoma Coast and Tomales Bay through sea kayaking, rock climbing, and backpacking. (for girls entering 7th and 8th gradesin the fall of 2005)
* June 12-25 Project Courage I
* July 3-16 Project Courage II
* August 7-20 Project Courage III

Transitions 2205
- a 14-day outdoor overnight adventure in the Sierra backcountry adventure which includes backpacking, rock climbing, canyoneering, and an 11,000-foot peak ascent. (for girls entering high school)
* July 10-23 Transitions I
* July 31 - August 13 Transitions II
Why participate?
GirlVentures is about empowering adolescent girls to discover and access their strengths through safe outdoor adventures, creative arts, and group interaction. GirlVentrues offers programs designed to physically and emotionally challenge girls into new ways of thinking and relating within their environments.
Cost: $1900 full and Partial Tuition assistance available.
