GirlVentures formally the Bay Area Girls Center was founded in 1997 by bay area educators Megan Armstrong and Elizabeth McLeod. Both Megan and Elizabeth earned their Masters of Education from the Harvard University School of Education. The core programs were influenced by their work with Drs. Annie Rogers and Carol Gilligan at the Harvard Project on Girls' Development and the Psychology of Women and model programs at the Thompson Island Outward Bound School an the Center for Ventures in Girls Education.
GirlVentures is about empowering adolescent girls to discover and access their strengths through safe outdoor adventures, creative arts, and group interaction. GirlVentures offers programs designed to physically and emotionally challenge girls winto new ways of thinking and relating within their enviroments.
Activities include: backpacking, rock climbing, group initiatives and problem solving, creative-expressive projects, sea kayaking, discussions about girls' issues, and more.
